  TODAY'S THOUGHTS

     From Joseph M
     Inspector of Snowstorms
     Mender of Broken Dreams
     Champion of the Downtrodden
     Philosopher, Engineer, Humanitarian

THANK YOU, BILL MAHER

To my memory, the first denigration of the Democrat Party, (by a Democrat, that is) goes back to the Thirties when Will Rogers said, "I'm not a member of any organized party. I'm a Democrat." I'm sure the remark brought a lot of laughs. We watch fuzzy films of old Will doing tricks with his lasso and look back fondly to what must certainly have been a "gentler time".

But it is our responsibility, if not our outright duty to know enough of our History to say that there has never been a "gentler time": a gentler time when U.S. Marines were sent into banana republics to protect corporate interests from nationalization, when death and destruction were not the hallmarks of our growing empire; when "Strange Fruit" hung on trees from southern New Jersey to Mississippi; when the philosophical, if not the literal, ancestors of the present One Percent did not control the bone-weary serfs who bought into the American Dream by the millions, willing to spend their entire lives dedicated to wage slavery, dying en route to their mythical piece of the pie.

But I digress. Old Will's clever quip which is the proper introduction to this blog, no longer holds its place as one of the dumbest things a Democrat can say about his/her own party. Alexandra Pelosi's brief, but damning "documentary" aired Friday night on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher". (Maher, by the way, who touts getting laid and smoking weed as often as it will yield laughter from his devoutly partisan Democratic-leaning guests and audiences makes no claims to being a Democrat, but a small-l liberal free thinker full of Anti-Republican jokes and "New Rules" and closing each episode with mock-serious commentaries. After having previously played Pelosi's (Nancy's daughter) earlier interview format with stereotypical random rednecks, Maher though it only Fair and Balanced to play Pelosi roaming the mean streets of her own neck of the woods, New York's 14th Street, coincidentally across from a welfare/employment office, a gathering place for young, unemployed black men with little hope and fewer prospects.

Predictably, her subjects were equally as vocal as her previous week's dentally impaired subjects, though it was immediately clear that these young unemployed black men were coming from a very different history, culture and experience. Pelosi's decision of a venue, and Maher's decision to air, both sides of the coin, however, was a false equivalency. Pelosi's "interviews" of young, Mississippi white men, for all its predictability, yielded little that Republican "strategists" will be able to use against him this Fall: (Wasn't it Obama, himself, who was originally excoriated for having said that poor folks faced with hard times will cling to their guns and their religion? Move on folks, nothing to see here!)

But, yes, Virginia, I'm afraid filming the 14th Street crowd is a very different matter. It's not about Will Rogers' homespun comic relief during hard times. It's that the kinds of comments she was about to gather, both in their tone and import, should have been eminently predictable to any serious journalist "filmmaker/ documentarian" and by definition, did not, could not represent anything of value to anyone.

Anyone, that is, but the next Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States.

We often hear the phrase "red meat" as describing some position or statement that will rile and consolidate a candidate's Base. Pelosi's short walk along 14th Street transcends Red Meat. For Republican candidates, it will be pure Catnip. There be our unenthused, unmotivated black brother who likes Obama because he gives us a lot of "stuff". We will see how one of Obama's fellow-Kenyans shows pride in his ability to leave a trail of  no fewer than five children with four different "baby-mommas" in his wake. We'll be watching soundbytes of threatening young men with obvious Kenyan roots (Kenya IS a part of Africa, right?) waiting dutifully in line for their "ObamaBucks".

Doubtless, the first president in our History to be called out as a "liar" before both Houses of Congress, the Supreme Court and the Joint Chiefs of Staff is going to have some crazy shit to overcome. Obama will be the first president since Lincoln to evoke the opposition to make destroying him, his presidency and his legacy a failure. He is already the first president whose mother placed a birth announcement in a Hiwaiian newspaper as a subterfuge to mask his Kenyan citizenship should the infant in her arms ever aspire to the Presidency.

We can be sure that whatever Clown College Dropout the Republican Party chooses this Summer, he will hit the ground running with a complete armament of the most vile kinds of attacks. So maybe Will was correct. Modern Democrats just don't get it. Their incessant preoccupation with proving thier liberalism (Maher: "...we are the guys who want to give them teeth!") means nothing when things get tough and the serfs look to cling to their guns and religion.

So thanks to you, Alexandra, and to you too, Bill. You guys scooped FOX NEWS and by your own admission, will "drive the Liberals insane." We can be sure that Alexandra's cinema verite' has already gifted the Republican shit machine with some of the best footage they could have hoped for. Reasonable people of all classes and denominations will wise up to the fact that "stupid" is not reserved for Republicans. And they will be correct.

Last night's broadcast was for me the tipping point in my love-hate relationship with Maher's humor: tired; derivative; and predictable as it is and has been for some time. I know HBO will eventually dismiss Real Time to sink into obscurity when the bean c
ounters determine that the show has been out-Nielsoned by some guys in the bayou who have to make a living by shooting an alligator in the face.

Having a Real Bad Day
I found her number and a note she wrote
Deep in a pocket of a real old coat
It just got by me someway
I must have had a real bad day

Said she was all moved in
And I promise it sure look fine
Suggested I come by and see her sometime
Said all the pictures are new
And I'll turn them all for you
She said; 'I get home at a quarter to six
And I'll be waiting for your call'
'I'll fix you something I'm sure you're gonna love
But we don't have to; we don't have to eat at all.'

No that's one of the problems off life out on the road
Little notes like this got no area code
I don't know what else to say
I'm having a real bad day

Said I'll get home at a quarter to six
And I'll be waiting for your call
I'll fix you something I'm sure you're gonna love
But we don't have to, we don't have to eat at all

No that's one of the problems of life out on the road
Little notes like this got no area code
I don't know what else to say
I'm having a real bad day
I don't know what to say
I'm having a real bad day
I'm having a real bad day

Our Search For Self
It seems like everyone’s on some sort of quest for self or should I say selves? The bookshelves are loaded with ”self help” books. Help for everyone: myself, yourself, himself, herself, themselves and ourselves, all trying to discover a hidden, desired, better self. To heal and love the child self; to encourage the creative self; to nourish the spiritual self; to understand the inner self and strengthen the adult self.

Maybe there’s a little too much self. Maybe we’re a little too self absorbed. Maybe that’s why more people seem self-ish and self- centered. Maybe we need to find balance between our self and others.

Not that there aren’t people out there who are perhaps too giving and loving; who, on the other end of the spectrum, are stuck being “people pleasers” and overly concerned with what others think.

So where’s the healthy balance? Obviously in the middle. How about do unto others” which makes you a better person? Also relax sometimes and just stop for a moment and “smell the roses” to help release some stress and enjoy the moments you can, which is great “self help”.

So much of the advice in these ”self help” books is common sense. What is your passion? Even if you don’t know your passion ;what makes you smile? Make time for that. Look inside yourself; think, feel; you’ll find self help.

Sing, dance, laugh, walk, write, cook, call a friend, do something you enjoy – you’ll find self help.
You don’t need self help books, you just need yourself and to make some time for you.

 Dangerous Problems with Counterfeit Viagra

The world, including the US, is being flooded with counterfeit Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications. A report in the Feb 12, 2009 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine highlights the dangerous problems.

The article reports on a total of 150 non-diabetic patients with severe hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) were admitted to the five public hospitals in Singapore. The admissions were between January 1 and May 26, 2008. All the patients were men except one, ages ranged from 19 to 97 years (median, 51). Seven patients remained comatose as a result of prolonged decrease glucose to the brain, and four subsequently died.

Several patients (45/150 or 30%) admitted to ingesting illegal sexual-enhancement drugs before the onset of hypoglycemia. Samples of the drugs obtained from these patients and from drugs seized in police raids were analyzed by means of high-performance liquid chromatography. It was found that many of the preparations were contaminated with Glyburide (a powerful medication used to treat diabetes).

So people thought they were taking Cialis or Viagra. What they were often taking were herbal preparations (e.g. Santi Bovine Penis ErectingCapsule) that contained small amounts of the active ingredient (Cialis or Viagra), but which also contained glyburide.

Since none of the men were diabetic, they experienced a severe drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Seven men sustained serious brain damage due to low blood sugar, of which four ultimately died.

Harmful ingredients found in counterfeit medicines include boric acid, leaded road paint, floor polish, shoe polish to get the sheen on the tablet, talcum powder, cement powder, chalk and brick dust, nickel and arsenic. Any active drug ingredient is usually minimal or simply wrong – one supply batch of fake Viagra was in fact amphetamine and not Viagra (sildenafil).

Here are some signs (from eDrugStore) to help you identify illegal "generic Viagra" [Cialis or Levitra:

· The site sells "generic VIAGRA" or "generic sildenafil citrate" [Viagra does not have a generic form available.]

· The site claims to sell a cheaper form of VIAGRA

· The price is cheaper than VIAGRA, by as much as 70%

· The site claims the drug is made to World Health Organization (WHO) standards, which may be a lie. The WHO does not review or approve any medication

· The drug is sold as a pill, but looks different from VIAGRA's normal color, shape and imprinting

· Delivery times may be extended (4 -21 days) due to product being shipped into the United States from a foreign country

· Shipping is initiated using a foreign country postal service to minimize chances of detection and seizure when entering United States
